CHOOSING

THE RIGHT GSD

WHAT
TO KNOW
+ LOOK FOR

1. FINDING THE RIGHT BREEDER

To ensure you choose the right German Shepherd Dog, the first step is to find a good breeder. But what makes a good breeder and how can you locate one? A good breeder is someone who doesn’t breed for money, but instead breeds for quality and has a reputation for producing high-quality puppies. Remember, a breeder is not just anyone who owns a female dog with a litter! A breeder is the one who plans litters with proper research in the pedigree of the Sire and Dam.

2. EVALUATING TEMPERMENT

Temperament is of utmost importance, as it determines whether a puppy is suitable for your family. Before choosing a puppy, you must evaluate the entire litter to select the right one. Don’t be swayed by cute, playful faces. Most of the first-time dog owners make mistakes by letting the puppies choose them, instead of the reverse.  Mentally sound puppies are friendly, trusting, and curious. Puppies that are hesitant, stiff, or display unwarranted aggression should be avoided. They should approach you without hesitation, crawl into your lap and start chewing your fingers. A sound temperament is crucial for a German Shepherd Dog to be a good companion.

3. ANALYZING THE PARENTS OF THE LITTER

When selecting a puppy, it’s important to see both parents of the litter and observe their interactions with each other and with you as a stranger. Unwarranted aggression or shyness are behavioral faults that can be genetically transferred to the litter. Remember, adult German Shepherd Dogs have their own unique valor and should have the right degree of aggression. If they are over aggressive, it’s a bad sign altogether. A healthy German Shepherd puppy should have effortless movement and be playful.

4. EVALUATING STRUCTURE + BONES

Structural soundness and strong bones are also important factors to consider when choosing your German Shepherd puppy. Carefully observe the prospective puppy’s movement before making a decision. The puppy should have the proper German Shepherd top line, proper curve of stifle, and strong bones.

5. LEARNING THEIR LINEAGE

Finally, lineage is another vital consideration when choosing the right German Shepherd puppy. However, lineage can be challenging to determine without experience in selecting German Shepherd Dogs.
